Professor Dr. April Camilla Roslani, a renowned colorectal cancer surgeon, has been removed from her position as dean of Universiti Malaya’s faculty of medicine.

Appointed in December 2020, April was relieved of her duties last month, reportedly without following due process.

The UM corporate communications center declined to comment. Initially, UM had agreed to issue a statement on the matter but later stated that there would be “no statement” at this time.

April is the only woman to have received the prestigious American College of Surgeons (ACS) fellowship, the largest organization of surgeons globally, with over 82,000 members.

UM’s website describes Dr. April’s leadership credentials as “undisputed,” highlighting her expertise in colorectal cancer surgery, proctology, surgical training, and professionalism.

She established UM Medical Centre’s colorectal surgery unit in 2007, now the country’s largest, playing a vital role in colorectal training and services in the region.

Additionally, April set up Malaysia’s first cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy service at UMM.

She graduated from the University of Wales College of Medicine in 1995 and received the UM Master of Surgery in 2003.

April is committed to advancing surgical standards and workplace fairness, as stated on the UM website. Her personal LinkedIn post reflects her dedication to improving surgical healthcare delivery in Malaysia.

“As the current Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Universiti Malaya, I have the opportunity to expand my sphere of influence, impacting both clinical and non-clinical arenas.”
