With a sudden change from freedom to the Movement Control Order (MCO) and being saddled with social distancing and contact tracing becoming the norm, some entrepreneurs have quickly developed some handy gadgets to help keep the germs away and you safe. The COVID-19 outbreak has brought to attention the amount of surfaces we touch in our daily lives. Railings, keyboards, door handles and many more carry the potential to spread the virus to your hands after which you may potentially touch your nose or mouth. So we figured we might give you some ideas of the gadgets listed here to help fix that.

Doors are of course used by everyone. There’s always somewhere new to get into whether it’s in your own home or in a public place. With a handy door grabber you can fulfill all of your secret pirate desires. The Hygiene Hook lets you open doors using the handle or push them open, keeping the contact to a minimum with a surface that may potentially have the virus. While good if you’re looking to stay clean you still have to clean the hook after using it for the day. Also available for this job is your elbow a much easier and free option.

Kooty Key, £7.99, amazon.co.uk

Why stop at doors though, take it to the next level with the Kooty Key. Doors may be a problem but what’s even worse? Toilets and ATMs of course. The Kooty Key is equipped with a hook shape to flush toilets with and a rubber prong which you can use to enter your PIN with at an ATM. Preventing you being exposed to those heavily used surfaces. The one drawback though being you should be washing it after every use to prevent contamination. Overall the Kootey Key is useful if you are going to take your care to the next level. It will provide you with a reuseable method limiting your exposure to commonly used surfaces and you could easily wash it with soap and water after use, Simple and effective.

Umbra Otto automatic soap pump, £40, uk.umbra.com

Soap and water is our best bet against COVID-19 and why touch a soap dispenser when you can have it be activated without risking contamination. The device sold by Umbra Otto is sleek and efficiently designed to fit into your bathroom or the kitchen where surfaces are most likely to harbour pathogens. Due to the surfaces being more at risk for cross contamination, the fact that you are touching one less item does not take away from the possibility. I personally do not recommend this item as it is a lot of extra cost when you could just as easily use regular soap, at a much cheaper price.

With the current pandemic many more solutions to help increase the number of ventilators available are steadily being introduced to the market. One such device is the Ethovent. While not an everyday use this device is a highly portable and easy to use ventilator which automates a breathing bag, removing the human element. Its multitude of features also comes with customisable features which can be added on or removed depending on the specific needs of a facility. While not meant for use without a respiratory specialist, I included this item because of the innovative push which COVID-19. Its quite small innovation but it frees one extra member of staff to complete other tasks in an emergency situation.

While commercially available methods and gadgets are interesting to consider, the chinese government in lieu of sending children back to school have started testing bracelets which track your temperature through a live feed. These bracelets are linked to phones via bluetooth to allow students to focus on their exams and study.  This push has been done in accordance with trying to reignite the fire of the 2nd largest economy and to get the economy turning again. Live temperature sampling would make life much easier and reduce the need to stop and take a temperature greatly in day to day life and also let you know when you should start taking precautions to make sure you aren’t unknowingly putting people in danger, making a good move to returning to the old normal before the pandemic.
