THE NEW COVID STRAIN

VIRUSES mutate all the time. New strain of viruses can differ geographically. New strain was first found in the UK but is now seen in a few countries. There are 23 genetic changes in this new strain. In South Africa the new variant is however different from the UK new strain.

WHAT DO WE NEED TO KNOW

  1. Known to be possibly 70% more infectious meaning spread more easily person to person.
  2. No evidence the strain causes more severe illnesses or higher mortality
  3. We are unsure if the current available vaccines is effective against the new variant . According to Prof Ken Ishii, a professor of vaccine science at the University of Tokyo, existing vaccines will generally be able to handle early mutation.
  4. Some experts found the new strain infecting children in higher numbers however this is yet to be confirmed by epidemiology datas.
  5. The more people infected the higher than chances for a mutation to occur.

DESPITE strains emerging we need to not overreact. We need to wait for more datas and more scientific know-how.  It is still back to emphasizing good public health measures; masking, social and physical distancing , good ventilation indoors, limiting gatherings of people and to keep calm.
